VP/Education News

By Sue Magyar

Greetings!

It's hard to get back to reality after such a blissful, relaxing, fun, retreat! Seeing all our quilt sisters from across the K Pen, quite a treat. AND, how come Homer had bare ground? We're buried here in Seward, and will probably have enough snow to cool our sodas at any Memorial Day picnics. But enough about that.

Speaking of retreats, this weekend (Feb 24ish), amid horrid weather and road conditions, two different sets of retreaters braved the road system to come this way - three to Tern Lake (a slice of heaven), and a pretty nice sized gang to Seward Resort. Just proves that once we are on a mission to get to retreat, nothing will stop us!

Many things are happening this year in the area of Education.

You will be hearing from our newly formed committee in this newsletter about our red & white quilt drive. The premise is to get the ball rolling at our April meeting, and display all of our beautiful red & white quilts at our October meeting. After that, take your quilt to your community's charity quilt drive. I have been dreaming in red & white.

Our 2024 classes are starting to get full, but there is still space available. Just to warn you, word is out on the street (non- guild members from around the state) that Deb Tucker and RaNae Merrill will be at our guild, and they are asking very pointed questions, wanting to sign up. I would defer to our members first, but it would be a good idea to get your spot secured by sending payment to me (Sue Magyar, PO Box 1617, Seward, AK 99664). These classes are:

  • Maxwell Bag, taught by Lily Huebsch. Saturday, May 18, class fee $65.
  • Sugar & Spice, taught by Deb Tucker. Thursday, July 11 & Friday, July 12. Class fee $110.
  • Mama Bear's Paws, taught by Deb Tucker. Saturday, July 13. Class fee $55.
  • Spirals Boot Camp, taught by RaNae Merrill. Friday, August 23. Class fee $60.
  •  Free Motion Mastery, taught by RaNae Merrill. Saturday, August 24. Class fee $60.

Class requirements are different, but all require a pattern, and some require rulers, or homework, or more. Once you pay, class requirements will be forwarded to you. Each of these teachers excel, and it would be an excellent opportunity to take their classes. Please take a moment and look these teachers up online, either their websites or YouTube. Amazing. Well, you may not find Lily online, but she is still amazing!

We're trying to get a list of teachers booked for 2025. Pam Ventgen has already agreed to teach, and we're looking at the all-time favorite Storm at Sea. Perhaps with a Snail's Trail element, or at least a talk or demo material on how to enhance this beautiful pattern. More on that later. At retreat, we had a questionnaire going for two different styles of quilts. We did not get enough votes to make either class worth it, for either the teacher or the guild. There needs to be a minimum number of students in order to make them worthwhile. However, I have a survey questionnaire that I'd like you to take a moment to complete. Please click the link. It won't take you but a minute. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DK2FKDF.

Also, I am looking for someone who could shadow me in my last year in this office. You'd learn quite a bit, experiencing what all goes in to classes, handling teachers and contracts, meetings, etc. This will give you the tools to do the job. Think about it and let me know.

If you have any ideas or suggestions for classes or fun things, please give me a shout. Hope to see you all at the April meeting, Saturday the 13th at 10:00 a.m., Christ Lutheran Church.
