Education Committee Report

By Barbara Steckel, Vice President

After the October meeting we had a great demo and handout of how many ways you could lay out one block.  Thanks to Teresa Crow and Lily Huebsch for taking the time to make the samples and the great handouts.  It is truly amazing how many different layouts there are for some basic pieces.  After the demo, Sue Magyar gave a great demo on how to use “Pinterest”.    She had a nice handout to take home so you spend more time on your own.  Thanks to our always willing volunteers.

In October, Pam Ventgen taught a wonderful class, “Toes in the Sand”.  The class was well attended and a lot of fun was had by all. The template/tool was new to most and the accuracy, which was achieved in using it was great.  The different choices in backgrounds and fabrics for the blocks made everyone think about what they could have used.   Naturally most people wished they had a few pieces of fabric they left at home.  Pam always has great suggestions for our classes.

On November 1st many of us started “Getting Ready for Christmas” with the projects presented from each area.  This is a very busy time of year and there were many conflicts, but we had a great turnout.  Really appreciate the time and effort everyone put into their projects.

Bonnie Hunter will be back with us on May 15 & 16, 2015.   We started registration at the October meeting and there are still spaces available.   Friday will be Texas Tumbleweeds from her new book “More Adventures with Leaders and Enders” and Saturday will be Smith Mountain Morning from “Scraps & Shirttails 2”.  Smith Mountain Morning uses different rulers and techniques. We realize this will require two books, but many people already have “Scraps and Shirttails 2” and have already ordered her new book.   If you do not want to do the second quilt, you can continue working on Texas Tumbleweeds on Saturday, but the registration will be for the 2 day class.  There is a $70.00 charge for the two-day class. If you haven’t signed up but are interested, please notify Sue Magyar by email at Magyar@arctic.net and mail your check for $70.00 payable to KPQG to Sue at P O Box 1617, Seward, AK 99664.  Your supply list will be emailed to you.  You are not signed up for the class until your check is received.

At the February retreat we will start taking registration for Anelie Belden’s two-day class on “Thoroughly Modern Dresden”.  The book will be required but you will be able to choose which of the quilts you would like to make.  The Class is scheduled for August 7 and 8, 2015.  The fee for this class will be $70.00.  The Guild will be hosting a Trunk Show on Friday night, August 7, so please mark your calendar. There is no charge for the Trunk Show.   Even if you aren’t taking the class, you can attend the trunk show.  Go to her web site www.anelie.com.

The Guild has contracts in place for Susan Else in May 2016, Jacquie Gering in August 2016 and Joan Ford in August 2017.  The last newsletter included the web site for each of these teachers.  Don’t forget, the Education Committee is always looking for suggestions from you on teachers for future classes and projects for after our October and April meetings.  Please talk to any of your Committee Members - Kathleen Barkley, Donna Glenz, Cathy Howlett, Lorna Kramer, Alice Krivitsky, Cheri Worley and Sue Magyar, Past President.
