March 2024 Kachemak Bay Quilters’ News
In this news clip we remember our friend, co-quilter and former president of our group, Elaine Plante, who passed away suddenly on Monday, Feb. 19th. Elaine had moved to her daughter’s home in San Diego this past September, and was in outpatient care for stent insertions when she died in recovery. Elaine will be greatly missed!
Winter news: In December several of us completed applique ornament table runners, while also working on holiday gifts. Following the holidays, we finished binding service quilts that Karrie had longarm quilted for us before she left for the winter. We were able to give a king and a twin quilt to a family that survived a fire in January.
On February 8, we made heart squares to stockpile for comfort quilts, enjoyed a “Galentine’s” Day potluck, and displayed quilted Valentine cards that we had made.
Also, February 16 to 18 was the Kenai Peninsula Quilters Guild Retreat at Lands’ End. Many quilters arrived to set up and sew on the 14th and 15th, as well, so we enjoyed the extra time to get to know each other and to finish projects. A highlight of the retreat was pattern designer Dana Michelle's talk and demonstration of her applique techniques. Also, the show and tell times were incredible, as we watched many quilters show their completed projects and tell their stories.
With the arrival of more daylight hours, we look forward to starting spring projects. The spring guild meeting will be helpful because it necessitates a trip from Homer to Soldotna. And what will we do following the meeting, you may ask? The answer may vary depending on the person, but several of us from Homer take the chance to visit quilt fabric shops to add to our supplies and fabric stash. See you there!
